Distribution and Habitat
The Scaled Roundtail Shelduck is distributed in North America (including the United States, Canada, Greenland, Bermuda, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and the transitional zone between North and Central America in Mexico), Eurasia and North Africa (including the whole of Europe, Africa north of the Tropic of Cancer, the Arabian Peninsula, and Asia north of the Himalayas-Hengduan Mountains-Minshan Mountains-Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River), the Pacific Islands (including Taiwan, the Dongsha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, Nansha Islands, and the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Java in Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea), Australia and New Zealand (including Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and nearby islands), and Antarctica (including the Antarctic continent, the Antarctic Peninsula, and several islands such as the South Shetland Islands and South Georgia).
The Scaled Roundtail Shelduck is usually found in the middle and upper layers of the ocean and rarely comes close to the ground.
Appearance
The Scaled Roundtail is 32–36 cm long, weighs 247–441 g, and has a wingspan of 74–92 cm. It resembles a gull in shape, but has a unique upper beak structure, consisting of a tubular nose with a hooked tip. The nostrils are located above the beak, forming two tube-like openings.
