Appearance

The Rufous Hummingbird (scientific name: Selasphorus rufus) is a small to medium-sized hummingbird.
The Brown Hummingbird is active during the day and rests at night. Its main diet consists of nectar, supplemented occasionally with small invertebrates, including midges, flies, spiders, and aphids. It is highly territorial and aggressive. The Brown Hummingbird is a migratory bird, wintering in warmer regions of Southern California and the Gulf Coast; adult males typically do not migrate. The Brown Hummingbird is very cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -20°C.
The Brown Hummingbird is polygamous, with the breeding season from March to July. Each female lays 2-3 eggs, which are incubated for 15-17 days. Brown Hummingbirds have a long lifespan, with the longest recorded lifespan being 8 years.
