Distribution and Habitat
The Orange-backed Woodpecker is distributed across the Pacific islands, including Taiwan, the Dongsha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, and Nansha Islands of China, as well as the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Java in Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
Appearance
It has a large head, a relatively long neck, an orange back, a strong and straight, chisel-shaped beak, a long and retractable tongue with short hooks at the tip, relatively short legs with 3 or 4 toes, and a flat or wedge-shaped tail with stiff and flexible feathers that support the body when pecking.
