Appearance

Chicks are covered in spots and stripes.

The European green woodpecker, scientifically known as *Picus viridis*, is a species that primarily feeds on ants and rarely pecks at tree borers, unlike other woodpeckers. It nests in trees, laying 4 to 6 eggs at a time, which hatch 19–20 days later.
