Distribution and Habitat

The Himalayan Three-Toed Woodpecker is distributed across the Indian subcontinent and southwestern China, including India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and southeastern Tibet. It is also found in the Indochina Peninsula and southeastern coastal China, including Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Hainan Island.

Appearance

The Himalayan Three-Toed Woodpecker is a slightly larger woodpecker (30 cm). Its upperparts are golden, with a red rump and a long, red crest. The face has black and white stripes. It is difficult to distinguish from the Golden-backed Three-Toed Woodpecker, but differs in having two thin black stripes on the sides of its throat, with a brown center instead of a single black central stripe. The underparts have distinct black stripes and scaly markings.
Iris – dark brown or crimson; Mouth – nearly black; Feet – lead-colored or greenish-brown.
