Significant features

Distribution and Habitat

The toucan is found in South America (including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands).
The toucan primarily inhabits lowland rainforests, and sometimes appears in open areas with sparse trees. They are rarely seen at altitudes above 1,700 meters.

Appearance

The Toucan, somewhat resembling a hornbill, can reach up to 60 cm in length. Its plumage is primarily black or chestnut-black, with a white throat and chest, sometimes lemon-yellow. The underside of its tail is bright red, and its bill is predominantly black with a sky-blue ring at the base. In adults, the nostrils are hidden beneath the base of the beak. The beak is actually quite light, far less heavy than it appears. It has a thin keratinous sheath on the outside and is hollow inside, with numerous fine bony struts arranged in an interlacing pattern. The Toucan has a long tongue, a distinctly serrated beak edge, and no bristles around the base of the beak. Its bare eyelids are typically a vibrant blue.

Detailed introduction

The Channel-billed Toucan, scientifically known as Ramphastos vitellinus, is a medium-sized climbing bird.

The toucan's call is hoarse and deep. It feeds on fruits and seeds, but unlike some birds that peck at their food, it tosses its food into the air and then opens its large beak to precisely scoop it up into its throat. This method simplifies the eating process by eliminating the need for the food to pass through its long beak—a clever and time-saving technique. Sometimes it also raids nests, eating the eggs and chicks.

Toucans inhabit tropical rainforests and prefer to live in flocks, as their ancestors taught them that collective action is better than individual effort. Within the flock, one bird always acts as a sentinel, vigilantly guarding the perimeter so that even when its companions are having fun, it can detect enemies in time and prevent surprise attacks.

Both parents share the task of incubating the eggs, but they often lack patience and rarely stay incubating for more than an hour. They are easily startled and will immediately fly away from the nest at the slightest disturbance, often without covering the eggs.

The toucan nests in tree cavities, preferring those made of good quality wood with an opening just wide enough for an adult to squeeze in, and a depth of 17 cm to 2 meters. If a suitable cavity is found near the base of a tree trunk, it will also attract birds that typically nest high up to build their nests closer to the ground. They lay 2 to 4 eggs at a time. The smooth, white eggs are laid in the unlined cavity and incubate for about 16 days. The hatchlings are completely naked and take at least 3 weeks to open their eyes. After hatching, the chicks need more than 50 days to establish themselves independently in foliage.

Listed as Vulnerable (VU) in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2016 ver 3.1.

It is listed in Appendix II of the 2019 edition of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
