The giant grebe is a large, almost flightless bird. It is robust, with laterally compressed legs that are extremely far back, and webbed toes that are slightly connected at the base, adapted for diving.
Detailed introduction
The giant grebe, scientifically known as *Podilymbus gigas*, was a large, almost flightless bird that fed on crustaceans. It went extinct around 1990 in a high-altitude lake in Guatemala. American ecologist Anne LaBastille spent 25 years observing the Atitlan grebe and has detailed information on its extinction.
