Barry's magpie-duck lives in North America and Iceland, and is a rare migratory bird in Europe, closely related to the magpie-duck found in Europe. They typically congregate together on lakes rich in insects, mollusks, and crustaceans. In winter, they migrate to unfrozen lakes and rivers.

Barry's magpie duck forages by diving. Its diet consists mainly of insects and their larvae, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, small fish, frogs, tadpoles, and other freshwater and saltwater aquatic animals that it can utilize.
