The Rusty-necked Woodpecker is found in South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands (also known as the Malvinas Islands).
The Rusty-necked Woodpecker inhabits dead trees or branches in tropical low-mountain mixed forests, especially bamboo groves. It lives in evergreen broad-leaved forests, at altitudes up to 1200 meters.
