Distribution and Habitat
The South American woodpecker is distributed throughout South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands (also known as the Malvinas Islands).
Appearance
The South American woodpecker is medium-sized (24cm). Males have a narrow red band on their nape, while females do not. Both sexes have red rumps, but the nearly white breast with black streaks lacks red or orange-red, distinguishing it from the similar Red-breasted Woodpecker and Brown-bellied Woodpecker. Iris – nearly red; bill – grey; legs – grey.
