Distribution and Habitat
The White-headed Round-tailed Shepherd is distributed in south-central Africa (including the southern Arabian Peninsula and the entire African continent south of the Sahara Desert (Tropic of Cancer)), South America (including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands), the Pacific Islands (including Taiwan, the Dongsha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, and Nansha Islands of China, as well as the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Java of Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea), Australia and New Zealand (including Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and their surrounding islands), and the Antarctic region (including the Antarctic continent, the Antarctic Peninsula, and several islands such as the South Shetland Islands and South Georgia).
The white-headed round-tailed shelduck is usually found in the ocean and upper-middle altitudes, rarely approaching flat land outside the land.
Appearance
The White-headed Round-tailed Shearling measures 40–46 cm in length, weighs 580–810 g, and has a wingspan of 109 cm. It resembles a gull in shape, but has a unique upper beak structure consisting of a tubular nose with a hooked tip. The nostrils are located above the beak, forming two tube-like openings. The head is white, with black markings around the eyes.

The white-headed roundtailed shearling typically calls during flight. It is usually found in the ocean and upper-middle atmospheres, rarely venturing into flat land. Its main diet consists of squid and crustaceans.
The white-headed round-tailed shelduck is a species of least concern, with a low level of threat and a relatively safe conservation status.
