Distribution and Habitat
The little green woodpecker is found in south-central Africa, including the southern Arabian Peninsula and the entire African continent south of the Sahara Desert (Tropic of Cancer).
Appearance
The Little Green Woodpecker is about 30cm long. The male has a bright red forehead and crown, exceptionally beautiful; the female lacks this red. Its beak is sharp, straight, and strong like a chisel; its tongue is long, thin, and retractable, with short hooks at the tip. There is a black stripe from the base of the beak to the eye; the rest of the head is grey, with the face, throat, and foreneck lighter, almost white; the back of the head and nape are darker, mixed with black feathers. The body plumage is mainly green; the wings are dark brown with white spots on the outer edges. The underparts, from the chest upwards, are dirty grey tinged with green. The central tail feathers are brown, with nearly blackish-brown tips and blackish-brown shafts. The tail feather shafts are stiff and thorn-like. The legs are short, with four toes, two pointing forward and two backward, all with sharp claws.
