Distribution and Habitat
The golden-crowned woodpecker is found in south-central Africa, including the southern Arabian Peninsula and the entire African continent south of the Sahara Desert (Tropic of Cancer).
Appearance
The head is also large, but the neck is relatively long. The beak is strong and straight, chisel-shaped, and the tongue is long and retractable with short hooks at the tip. The legs are relatively short, with 3 or 4 toes. The tail is flat or wedge-shaped, with stiff and flexible feather shafts that support the body when pecking wood.

The Golden-crowned Woodpecker, scientifically known as Dendropicos xantholophus or Chloropicus xantholophus, and also called Yellow-crested Woodpecker, primarily feeds on pests such as longhorn beetles, clearwing moths, and jewel beetles that bore into the trunks of trees.
