Distribution and Habitat
The Scarlet Woodpecker is found in south-central Africa, including the southern Arabian Peninsula and the entire African continent south of the Sahara Desert (Tropic of Cancer).
Appearance
The Scarlet Woodpecker is 14–15 cm in length. Its back is dark olive with white spots. The belly is white with black stripes. The rump is yellowish-brown. The throat and face are white, separated by black stripes. Males have a red crest extending to the back of the neck, while females have a dark black crest and a black nape. The beak is strong and chisel-like, and the tongue is long and retractable, with short hooks at the tip. The tail feathers are stiff and flexible, supporting the body while pecking.
