Distribution and Habitat

The Barred Kingfisher is distributed in the Indochina Peninsula and the southeastern coastal areas of China.
The Barred Kingfisher inhabits the tropical rainforests of Borneo, generally ranging from sea level to an altitude of 625 meters, and often exceeding 800 meters. Like many other kingfishers, they do not rely on rivers and ponds in forest habitats.

Appearance

The Barred Kingfisher is 20 cm in length. Adult males have clearly defined bright brown markings on their forehead, lores, cheeks, and collar. The crest is covered in bluish-purple feathers with a black base. The tail is blue with approximately six fine blue stripes.
The chicks and juveniles are black with only two white stripes. The chin and throat are white. There is an orange transition zone on the breast, wings, and subtail, but the central abdomen is white. The underside of the wings is pale yellow. It has a powerful red beak, yellowish-brown irises, and tan legs.
The males and females have different plumage. Adult females have a very distinct red and black stripe on their crown. The tail has six closely spaced black stripes. The throat and chin are white. The rest of the underparts, including the chest and abdomen, are white or pale yellow, while the breast and wings are black and white.

The call of the barred kingfisher is a long string of whistling "ouiiiou", followed by 15 short hissing sounds after a brief 17-second interval, then the first syllable is shortened and gradually disappears in the last two syllables.

The Barred Kingfisher typically lives alone, but pairs may also inhabit the shady areas of tropical rainforests. They are highly territorial, becoming even more aggressive during the breeding season. This is a completely carnivorous kingfisher. Their main diet consists of grasshoppers, orthoptera (crickets), cicadas, stick insects, beetles and their larvae, and they also prey on small lizards.

The Barred Kingfisher nests in tree trunks about 3 meters above the ground, typically in termite-eroded cavities. It lays 2 to 5 eggs at a time. Breeding season varies by location: February and May in Thailand, May in Sumatra and Java, and March to January in Borneo.

Listed as Least Concern in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (ver 3.1, 2008).
