Distribution and Habitat

Distributed in South America and the Andes Mountains, including Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana, extending via the Amazon River to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina (Salta Province).
Green-winged geese are inhabitants of the tropical forests of South America, choosing forests, lakes, swamps, open woodlands, or savannas as their habitats. This species primarily inhabits terrestrial areas but also frequently perches in trees.

Appearance

The Green-winged Goose measures 61-76 cm in length. Adult geese have a brownish-grey head and neck, chestnut-colored wings and flaps, black wings with white speculum, red legs, and a black and pink beak. Males and females have identical plumage, with males being slightly larger. Young geese, compared to adults, have duller, less distinctive plumage.

Detailed introduction

The green-winged goose (scientific name: *Neochen jubata*), also known as the Orinoco goose, rarely swims and appears clumsy in flight. It resembles a goose more closely, hence its English name—Orinoco Goose.

Green-winged geese are highly territorial birds during the breeding season, typically nesting in tree cavities, but occasionally on the ground. The male has a loud, whistling call, while the female is a clucking goose.

Listed as Near Threatened (NT) in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 2009 ver 3.1.
