Distribution and Habitat
The Brown-breasted Woodpecker is distributed across the Himalayas, India, Southeast Asia, and the Greater Sunda Islands. It is a common resident bird in the eastern Himalayas, reaching altitudes of up to 2000 meters. Birdwatching records exist in Tibet and Yunnan.
The Brown-breasted Woodpecker prefers open woodlands and secondary forests, farms, and courtyards.
Appearance
The Brown-breasted Woodpecker is a small black and white woodpecker. The male has a red crown, while the female has a black crown; the sides of the face are white, with black lower cheek stripes and a collar; the upperparts are mostly black and white; the underparts are buff with black streaks, and the undertail coverts are red. Iris – brown; bill – bluish-black on top and bluish-grey on the bottom; legs – olive-colored.
