Detailed introduction
The Downy Woodpecker, scientifically known as Dryobates pubescens, is the smallest woodpecker in North America.

The downy woodpecker can peck holes about 10cm in size in dead trees, meaning it has a larger habitat range than larger woodpeckers. Downy woodpeckers primarily feed on insects, and in spring and summer, you can easily hear them "tapping" at trees.

Listed as Least Concern in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (ver 3.1: 2009).
